03 · Cedar Lap & Hardie Plank

Edged lining board installation options.

The edged profile gives you freedom: the boards can be installed with overlaps or side by side with joints, horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Cedral Lap / Hardie Plank — Horizontal Overlap
— Variant 01

Horizontal overlay

Horizontal lap siding means that the siding boards are installed on top of each other so that each board overlaps the one below by at least 30 mm. A classic rustic look, the fasteners remain visible.

Cedral Lap / Hardie Plank — Vertical Overlap
— Variant 02

Vertical overlay

Vertical overlap siding (Swedish style) means that the boards are installed vertically with their edges overlapping by at least 30 mm. The fasteners remain visible as usual, adding a rustic style to the facade.

Cedral Lap / Hardie Plank — Diagonal Overlap
— Variant 03

Diagonal overlap

Diagonal overlap siding means that the boards are installed at an angle, usually at a 45° angle. The edges overlap by 30 mm and the fasteners are hidden. It is well suited for creating architectural accents.

Cedral Lap / Hardie Plank — Horizontal Joints
— Variant 04

Horizontal joints

Horizontal joint cladding means that the boards are laid side by side without covering, leaving regular horizontal joints visible. Creates a modern, geometric look. Preferred joints: 1–5 mm.

Cedral Lap / Hardie Plank — Vertical Joints
— Variant 05

Vertical joints

Vertical joint cladding means that the boards are installed vertically, side by side, leaving the regular vertical joints and fixings visible. The result is a clean, rhythmic and modern facade. Preferred joints: 1–5 mm.

04 · Cedral Click & Hardie VL

Installation options for lining boards with butt joints.

The profile fastenings with tongue and groove joints remain hidden. A clean line remains between the boards — a modern and uniform facade.

Cedral Click / Hardie VL — Horizontal
— Variant 01

Horizontal

Horizontal tongue-and-groove siding means that the siding boards are connected to each other using a tongue-and-groove system. The fasteners remain hidden and a horizontal line remains between the siding boards, which are laid flat next to each other.

Cedral Click / Hardie VL — Vertical
— Variant 02

Vertical

Vertical tongue-and-groove siding means that the siding boards are connected to each other using a tongue-and-groove system. The fasteners remain hidden and there is a vertical line between the boards. A modern, uniform appearance.

Cedral Click / Hardie VL — Diagonal
— Variant 03

Diagonal

Diagonal tongue-and-groove siding means that the siding boards are connected to each other using a tongue-and-groove system. The fasteners remain hidden and a rhythmic line running at a 45° angle is left between the boards.

05 Window frames and knots

Three ways to finish corners and edges.

The finish of the joints determines how clean and complete the facade will look in the end. Choose the option that suits your style and budget already in the design phase.

Edged board fence
— Variant 01

Edged board fence

Edged fiber cement siding is used to finish door and window frames and building corners. The siding is cut in half lengthwise to create a suitable trim. The fasteners remain visible as usual.

Fiber cement skirting board
— Variant 02

Fiber cement skirting board

When finishing window sills and corners, a separate fiber cement skirting board is used, which is thicker than the siding boards. There is usually a gap of about 1 mm between the board and the skirting board; it must be cut precisely.

Aluminum corner profiles
— Variant 03

Aluminum corner profiles

Different aluminum profiles are used to finish window frames and corners. The profile attachments are behind the board; each node has its own special shape of strip. Some strips cover the cut edges, others do not.

07 · Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about fiber cement before you buy.

Material, brands, advantages, bottlenecks and installation logic — the eight most frequently asked questions on one page.

01 What is fiber cement siding?
Fiber cement siding is a ventilated facade covering material similar to wood siding. Fiber cement is a composite material that consists mainly of cement, cellulose fibers, sand, and water. This combination of materials gives fiber cement siding a durability that can withstand the changing climate of Estonia — from crisp winters to humid and windy summers.
02 What is James Hardie fiber cement siding?
James Hardie is a lesser-known brand in Estonia, but an internationally leading manufacturer of fiber cement building materials, including siding. Originally an Australian company, it has now expanded significantly to the USA and Northern and Central Europe. Hardie offers two exterior siding profiles — VL Plank and Plank. Thanks to the innovative ColorPlus® Technology finish, it retains color better than alternatives.
03 What is CEDRAL fiber cement siding?
CEDRAL is a brand of fiber cement siding, part of the Etex Group. It is a global company of Belgian origin, offering a wide range of building materials and solutions, including fiber cement siding. CEDRAL offers two exterior siding profiles — Click and Lap (or Classic).
04 What are the main advantages of fiber cement siding?

There are several advantages to using fiber cement siding:

  1. Non-flammability — fireproof material, higher safety compared to plastic and wooden lining.
  2. Resistance to mold and rot — the material does not absorb moisture or decompose, making it suitable for Estonia's humid climate.
  3. Pest resistance — termites, ants, and other wood-damaging pests do not affect it.
  4. Low maintenance — no regular treatment, varnishing or painting required.
  5. Aesthetic versatility — available in a variety of finishes and colors; the look of natural wood or stone without the maintenance.
05 What are the main drawbacks of fiber cement siding?

Like any material, fiber cement siding has some drawbacks:

  1. Fragile during transportation — fiber cement is strong, but more brittle than wood. We recommend lifting the rafters during transportation. When installing the rafters, make sure that the distance between the wooden beams is at least 600 mm from center to center.
  2. Higher price — long-lasting and durable, but the initial purchase and installation cost is often higher than wood siding or vinyl panels.
  3. Natural ventilation requirement — intended for covering ventilated facade systems. There must be at least 20 mm of free space between the cladding boards and the insulation layer for air movement. This ensures the system's functionality and prevents moisture damage.
06 How long is the lifespan of fiber cement siding?
Fiber cement siding is designed to withstand changing climates and different environmental conditions. The material is dimensionally stable and extremely durable — which means it has a long lifespan. Generally, a minimum of 50 years can be expected. In the case of James Hardie, the expected lifespan is over 60 years, of which the first 15 years are covered by a warranty.
07 What does overlapped board mean?
Overlap siding is a classic siding style characterized by a facade formed by partially overlapping siding boards. The installation uses straight-edged, or edged, siding boards (such as Hardie® Plank) that are attached to the subfloor so that each subsequent board overlaps the top edge of the previous one. Typically, the boards are installed horizontally in this type of siding.
08 What does full and half-full lining board mean?
Half-toned siding is a more modern siding style characterized by horizontal lines that contrast with the facade. "Half-toned" refers to the half-toned joint at the edges of the siding — one edge of the board has a groove and the other has a slightly protruding tongue that fit together (such as Cedral Click). This is different from full-toned siding, where the tongue and groove are deeper and fit more tightly (such as Hardie® VL Plank).
