The bathroom is one of the most technically complex and intimate rooms in the home. Every homeowner sooner or later reaches a crossroads during renovation: should they choose a standard set that is immediately available in stores or invest time and money to have custom-made furniture made? Bathrooms in typical Estonian apartments and private houses are often of non-standard dimensions and full of pipes, ventilation boxes and nooks and crannies. A common myth claims that only tailor-made furniture can provide enough storage space in a small bathroom with a stylish appearance. However, in 2026, this perception is outdated.

The battle: custom vs. standard – which is which?

Before we go any further, let's clearly define what we're talking about.

Standard furniture is bathroom furniture with universal dimensions (e.g. 60cm, 80cm wide sink cabinet ) that is produced in specific series. In general, standard furniture offers a limited number of finishes to choose from, but the furniture is usually in stock or has a relatively short delivery time.

Modular furniture is a set of different standard parts that can be customized and scaled as desired. A number of top manufacturers have created series that consist of dozens of modules that fit together. This means that additional modules (such as a shelf module or an extended worktop ) can be added to the selected base cabinet (for example, a sink cabinet).

Bespoke furniture is tailor-made. It is designed and manufactured to the exact millimetres of your bathroom and your specific wishes. You have complete control over the materials, colours, fittings and contents. It is a solution that is created from scratch.

Many people are afraid of standard furniture because "nothing will fit in it". This is wrong. The biggest advantage of modular furniture is scalability. You don't just buy a cabinet, you put together a complete solution.

Price and budget: is more expensive always better?

Custom-made furniture is almost always more expensive than standard solutions. The price difference can be about 2 times, depending on the choice of materials. But why?

Standard furniture price

In the case of standard furniture, the price is kept down by economies of scale. The material is cut in an optimized way, the design is developed once, and the production lines operate automatically.

  • Budget: A standard solution is usually about 30-50% cheaper than custom-made furniture of the same size, and for example, a working sink cabinet set can be purchased for as little as 300-400 euros . With the money you save, you can afford a better faucet, a higher-quality shower system, or more luxurious tiles.
  • Assembly: Standard furniture often comes assembled or with clear instructions, but must be secured in place independently.

Price of custom-made furniture

Here you pay for the designer's hours, special materials, and craftsmanship, but every detail is unique.

  • Budget: The price usually includes measurement, design, production and installation. The usual price for a custom-made sink cabinet and sink set is in the range of 700 – 800 euros , depending on the materials.
  • Unique: This is indispensable if the bathroom has very unusual angles (not 90 degrees), sloping ceilings, or if you want a material that no one else uses (e.g. rare wood veneer).

Materials and durability in humid environments

The bathroom is an extreme environment for furniture. Hot steam, splashes of water and temperature fluctuations are a daily occurrence.

The standard solution has been tested

Standard furniture series undergo strict load and moisture tests. Manufacturers use special moisture-resistant MDF and melamine, which are designed to last for years in bathroom conditions.

Custom order material freedom

When ordering furniture from a specialist, you can demand:

  1. Painted MDF: This is a board that is completely coated (encapsulated) with paint and has extremely good resistance to moisture.
  2. Moisture-resistant plywood: a trendy and extremely durable material that fits well in industrial or Scandinavian styles.
  3. High-quality fittings: you can choose, for example, Blum or Hettich rails that do not rust and close quietly even after years.

Important: Moisture-resistant furniture does not mean waterproof. No wood-based material should be soaked in water.

Space-saving solutions and planning

Typical Estonian bathrooms in older prefabricated houses are notorious for their small size and maze of pipes.

Limitations of the standard

Standard cabinets are usually about 45-48 cm deep. If your bathroom only has 38 cm of space next to the door, a standard cabinet will not fit there or will extend into the doorway. The result is wasted space and an uncomfortable movement path.

  • Floor-to-ceiling cabinets: In a narrow bathroom, the only direction is up. Modular furniture or a bathroom cabinet from the same series as a standard sink (e.g. 22-36 cm deep) can be a lifesaver. Tall bathroom cabinets can hold a huge amount of chemicals, towels and other bathroom accessories, saving space.

The magic of custom order

Custom-made bathroom furniture allows you to make the most of every millimeter.

  • Hiding pipes: The cabinet can be designed to hide unsightly pipes and water meters while still allowing access to them.
  • Worktop over washing machine: A very popular solution where the sink and washing machine are combined into one long surface, creating a complete and spacious impression. However, this solution is also often feasible with standard and modular furniture.

Time and Process: Patience vs. Speed

This is where standard furniture often wins.

  • Standard: you go to the store, choose and take it home (or order from the online store in 1-3 business days). If the dimensions of the bathroom allow and you need a new "yesterday", this is the only right choice.
  • Special order: it's a process.
    1. Consultation and surveying.
    2. Design and approval of drawings.
    3. Production (usually 4-8 weeks, depending on the manufacturer's workload).
    4. Installation.

If you are planning a bathroom renovation, furniture design should be ordered early so that it is ready at the same time as the tiler finishes.

Quick conclusions

The choice between custom-made furniture and a standard solution comes down to three factors: your budget, the spatial characteristics of the bathroom, and your demands for design.

If you have a spacious bathroom and can find a product in a store that matches your style, standard furniture is a rational and budget-friendly choice. However, if you struggle with space constraints, want to hide pipes, or dream of a specific color scheme, custom furniture is worth the investment.

  • Suitability: Custom-made furniture fits perfectly into complex and small spaces, while standard furniture often leaves unused space.
  • Price: the standard solution is at least 2 times cheaper and immediately available.
  • Material: For custom orders, you can choose moisture-resistant content (painted MDF, plywood) and top-quality fittings. For standard furniture, you depend on the manufacturer's choice.
  • Design: Customization allows you to create a unique style that matches the rest of your home. Standard has a limited selection.

Time: If you're in a hurry, choose standard. If you have time to plan, consider a custom order.

u003cstrongu003eKui palju maksab vannitoamööbel eritellimusel?u003c/strongu003e

Hinda on raske fikseerida ilma projektita, kuid keskmise suurusega valamukapi (koos sahtlitega) hind algab kvaliteetse tegija juures umbes 700-800 eurost. Koos kõrgete kappide ja töötasapinnaga võib komplekti hind ulatuda 2000+ euroni. Hind sõltub materjalist (värvitud MDF vs melamiin) ja furnituurist.

u003cstrongu003eKas eritellimusmööbel on täiesti veekindel?u003c/strongu003e

Eestis on keskmine ooteaeg 4 kuni 8 nädalat. See sõltub hooajast ja valitud materjalide saadavusest. Keerukamate lahenduste puhul võib aeg pikeneda.

u003cstrongu003eKas standardmööbel sobib, kui mul on torud seina peal (mitte sees)?u003c/strongu003e

Jah. Enamik kvaliteetseid valamukappe on disainitud nii, et tagaseina ja sahtlite taha jääb u0022teenindusalau0022 (tavaliselt 5-7 cm), kuhu mahuvad torud. Samuti on valamukappidel spetsiaalsed väljalõiked sifooni jaoks.

u003cstrongu003eKas standardmööbel kestab sama kaua kui eritellimusmööbel?u003c/strongu003e

Sageli isegi kauem. Standardmööbli tootjad kasutavad materjale, mis on läbinud ranged laboratoorsed niiskustestid. Eritellimuse puhul sõltub kvaliteet konkreetse tisleri materjalivalikust ja servakantimise kvaliteedist.
